Dental Scaling & Root Planing Mississauga

Plaque is a sticky film that forms on teeth and contains bacteria. Over time, plaque can harden into calculus (also called tartar), which firmly adheres to the tooth surfaces.

Both plaque and calculus can irritate your gums. This irritation can lead to inflammation, gum recession, bleeding, and in severe cases, bone loss around the teeth—conditions collectively known as periodontal (gum) disease.

The earliest stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, which is reversible and typically causes bleeding when brushing or flossing. If left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, which causes more severe gum damage, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing are standard treatments for periodontal disease. Scaling removes plaque and calculus from the surfaces of your teeth, both above and below the gum line. Root planing smooths the roots of the teeth and removes any remaining deposits, helping the gums reattach to healthy tooth surfaces.

For extensive deposits, the area may be numbed to ensure comfort. Dentists often use a combination of sonic and hand instruments: sonic tools remove larger buildups, while hand instruments clean remaining tartar and polish the tooth surfaces. Mild sensitivity or soreness may occur for a few days after the procedure, usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Follow-Up Care

After treatment, a follow-up visit is typically scheduled to check gum healing and monitor periodontal health. Regular checkups every 3–6 months help maintain healthy gums, reduce periodontal pockets, and prevent further bone loss.

If you are considering scaling and root planing, contact your dental professional to schedule a consultation and discuss the best approach for your oral health.
