Canadian Dental Care Plan

We Welcome Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) Patients at Smile Horizons Dental Arts
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a significant federal government initiative aimed at reducing the cost of dental care for eligible Canadian residents. At Smile Horizons Dental Arts in Mississauga, we are proud to be participating providers, helping to make essential dental treatments more accessible to our community.
Is the CDCP Right for You? Understanding Eligibility
The CDCP is designed for Canadian residents who meet specific income requirements and do not have access to private dental insurance. You may qualify if:
- Your adjusted family net income is less than $90,000 per year.
- You do not have access to private dental insurance or employer-sponsored dental benefits.
- You are a Canadian resident for tax purposes.
- You have filed your most recent tax return. (For 2025 applications, you must have filed your 2024 tax return).
Eligibility is determined solely by the federal government based on the criteria above.
Applying for the CDCP: Timeline and How-To
Applications for the CDCP are being rolled out in phases based on age group and other criteria. If you meet the eligibility requirements, you can apply directly through the official government channels.

What Dental Services Are Covered?
The CDCP covers a range of essential dental services based on the CDCP Oral Health Benefit Grid. Covered services include:
- Preventive Care: Routine check-ups, cleanings (scaling and polishing), fluoride treatments, sealants.
- Diagnostic Services: Oral exams, X-rays.
- Restorative Treatments: Fillings and crowns.
- Endodontic Care: Root canal treatments.
- Periodontics: Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing).
- Prosthodontics: Complete and partial dentures, including repairs and relines.
- Oral Surgery: Tooth extractions.
Important Note on Coverage
Coverage is specific to the CDCP Oral Health Benefit Grid and includes frequency limits for certain procedures. Not all dental procedures are covered by the CDCP. Furthermore, some services require pre-authorization from the CDCP administrator (Sun Life) before treatment can be performed (required starting November 2024). We highly recommend reviewing your coverage details once approved.
How Much Does the CDCP Cover? (Co-payments)
The CDCP aims to reduce costs, but it may not cover the full cost of treatment for all individuals. The amount covered depends on your adjusted family net income:
- Adjusted Family Net Income below $70,000: The CDCP covers 100% of the CDCP fee schedule for covered services.
- Adjusted Family Net Income between $70,000 and $79,999: The CDCP is expected to cover 60% of the CDCP fee schedule for covered services. You would be responsible for a co-payment of 40%.
- Adjusted Family Net Income between $80,000 and $89,999: The CDCP is expected to cover 40% of the CDCP fee schedule for covered services. You would be responsible for a co-payment of 60%.
The percentage of costs covered is based on the CDCP fee schedule, which may differ from standard provincial dental fee guides.
Renewing Your CDCP Coverage
To ensure your CDCP coverage continues without interruption, you must successfully renew your application annually. Eligibility is reassessed each year based on your updated income and private insurance status.
- Annual renewal period typically begins in March.
- The deadline to renew for uninterrupted coverage is June 1st each year.
